The Mayor and Aldermen are elected every four (4) years. The next Consolidated Primary is 2-28-2017 and Consolidated Election will be held 4-4-2017 for these offices. Packets may be picked up at the Board of Election Commissioners Office beginning 90 days preceding the last day to file nomination papers. Party petitions are filed at the Board of Election Commissioners, 301 S. 6th Street, Rockford, not more than 99 days nor less than 92 days prior to the date of the consolidated primary. Nonpartisan petitions are filed not more than 113 days nor less than 106 days prior to the consolidated election.

Qualifications: No person shall be eligible for the office of mayor or alderman:
- Unless they are a qualified elector of the municipality and has resided therein at least one year next preceding their election or appointment; or
- Unless, in the case of alderman, they reside within the ward for which they are elected; or
- If they are in arrears in the payment of any tax or other indebtedness due to the city; or
- If they have been convicted in Illinois state courts or in courts of the United States of malfeasance in office, bribery, or other infamous crime.
The Board of Election Commissioners is responsible for elections within the City of Rockford.
